Security for Mobile Devices: Simple Steps
for SMBs
The increasing use of mobile devices has created new security challenges for small and midsize businesses. Even without a dedicated security department, however, SMBs can still protect their networks by following a few best practices. The first is to have a written usage policy that prohibits employees from installing or using any piece of equipment not reviewed by the IT department. It is also important to limit access to USB ports to employees who need to be able to take data out of the building. Disabling the AutoRun function on Windows will prevent bootable USB devices from automatically connecting to a network. If possible, USB devices should use encryption, and devices should be purged of data once a project is completed. Companies should also use encryption tools to secure access to laptops. Laptops should be configured so that employees cannot download software, and contain firewalls and antivirus software. As a general rule, wireless access points should be barred from the network. The wireless devices that are absolutely necessary should contain encryption and be inspected by the IT staff. Ideally, wireless access points will be included in a virtual private network.
