Trojan Horses on the Rise
A big storm of Trojan malware attacks is getting ready to hit, which is why security experts at Sophos are warning users to switch to Macs if they want to protect themselves. Sophos has released a new report titled, "Sophos Security Threat Management Report Update," which gives details on what has been going in cybercrime for the past six months. The research found that new viruses and worms have decreased, but there has been an increase other kinds of malware, primarily motivated by financial gain and theft of information. "Criminals are constantly finding new ways to get their hands on some easy cash and now they've stooped to blackmail," says Graham Cluley at Sophos. "Given these filthy tactics, it's understandable that authorities are giving out increasingly harsh sentences for crimes of this nature." This year a new kind of Trojan horse attack where users are having their files held for ransom has taken place from programs such as Ransom-A, Zippo-A, and Arhiveus-A Trojans. If users do not pay blackmailers to get their data back, they lose it. Cluley says Macs are a safer option for home PC users since hackers generally target Windows users.
