CHECKLIST: Business Security
IT security experts suggest that businesses take several steps to prevent IT security breaches. Keeping software current is important, and doing the maintenance to patch security holes in operating systems is far less costly than an actual security breach. Businesses should take advantage of free software updates from vendors, though these updates should be downloaded, tested, and implemented quickly to keep downtime and potential damage to a minimum. Companies should create and enforce a security policy, one that provides rules for employees' personal use of the Internet, including the downloading of music, files, and software. The security policy also must address the protection of client data. Employees should be trained regularly in areas that pertain to the written security policy, and the security policy should be enforced across all levels of the company.
