Seven Tips for Protecting Data on a Laptop
Mobile devices, not insecure data transfer, are the cause of 86 percent of security events in wireless networks according to a recent study by Gartner. There are several ways to protect a notebook computer, including exercising more discipline when on the move. More than 5,000 mobile devices were lost at airports in Germany, Australia, and Switzerland, according to a recent survey of lost and found offices at the 10 biggest airports in the region. When traveling with a notebook, passengers should make sure the notebook case and its contents are in place before leaving the plane, taxi, or train. Difficult passwords should be used as well as hardware to protect the password such as smart cards or tokens. A combination of letters and numbers should be used when creating passwords. Other useful security safeguards include implementing automatic encryption as well as setting up an electronic safe. Important information should always be protected electronically with devices such as hard disks and network directories, which can be used to create electronic safes, as well as CD-ROMS and DVDs.
