Steps to a Safer Wireless Network
There are nearly 115,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the globe, according to JiWire's Wi-Fi Hotspot Finder. The proliferation of these hotspots and the fact that almost all laptops come with wireless cards underscore the importance of wireless network security. AirDefense.net Chief Security Officer Richard Rushing says consumers need to be wary of offers of "Free Internet Access," as they do not know if the network is secure. There are several things mobile workers can do to protect sensitive data. They should access the Internet via their company's virtual private network (VPN) if possible, keep only a couple network addresses in their preferred connections list, and ensure that they disconnect from public Wi-Fi networks before they leave the area. Additionally, users should check that they have enabled the security features on their home wireless routers, frequently change passwords, and activate email security tools. "People will recommend things like hiding your network, except that you can't really hide it," explains Ulrich Wiedmann of McAfee. "You'll only hide it from people who don't have the hackers' tools."
