The Top 9 Ways to Secure Mobile Devices
More and more companies are giving their outside sales and support and traveling executives mobile devices such as smart phones that have access to corporate email, as well as databases on corporate clients, research and development, financials, and company strategy. This creates a problem since these devices are often susceptible to loss and theft, said analyst Jack Gold at the FOSE '06 conference, who estimates that these losses cost companies at least $35 per customer whose personal information is lost. "My expectation is that we will see at least one major theft of a smart phone or PDA exposing sensitive corporate data within the next two years," said Gold. He gives several tips for companies to help reduce the risk of information being stolen or lost on both laptops and handheld mobile devices. Users must be educated on the importance of security, care must be taken to sure the password is set to "on" for all mobile devices, and a mobile management system that enforces data security polices on mobile and wireless devices must be installed, said Gold. He also recommends that files are encrypted, active firewall protection and virus protection are on all mobile devices, and that companies ascertain which files can and cannot be downloaded, and by which users.
