Combine the Best Security Options
The Internet is a valuable tool for gaining information, but it also opens the door to several security threats such as viruses, spam, and zombies. These threats have led IT staff to search for external support to keep enterprise networks secure. Network security providers are increasing their managed security services offerings by using services that target security threats where they are best defeated. Email viruses and spam are best defeated in the network. IT managers can deploy software that deals with spam after it hits the enterprise network, but these solutions are often expensive and use too much bandwidth. Network-based solutions are simpler, free up IT resources, and decrease capital costs. They also have the ability to detect a new threat when it starts across different client accounts and stop it before it attacks, which is more effective than a LAN-based application. Security threats are evolving and so is the technology used to fight them. Service providers are looking at bundling network-based security with Internet access services to provide customers with an enterprise connectivity that has built-in protection in an effort to ease the security burden for the IT manager. This is referred to as the "clean pipe" approach. The clean pipe method can also be used on enterprise wide-area networks (WANs).
